A collection of materials assembled after the death of Phoebe Apperson Hearst. Contains obituary notices, memorial documents, and articles and clippings on her gifts to the University of California, including many on the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, as well as to other causes. Also includes one holograph document by Mrs. Hearst: her remarks at the groundbreaking for the President's House at the University, May 12, 1900.

Phoebe Elizabeth Apperson Hearst was born in St. Clair, Missouri, the daughter of Drucilla (Whitmire) and Randolph Walker Apperson. In 1860, businessman George Hearst met Phoebe when he returned to St. Clair to care for his dying mother. When they married on June 15, 1862, George Hearst was 41 years old, and Phoebe was 19.
